Westfield Helps Put Food on Piedmont Tables Amid Pandemic

In these times of uncertainty and upheaval, being able to deliver some good news to our clients and friends at Second Harvest Food Bank last week was good medicine for us here at Sentinel. Second Harvest has received a $15,000 grant from insurance carrier Westfield; much needed funds that will be used to put food on the table for families in 18 Piedmont counties.

Sentinel nominated Second Harvest for Westfield’s Legacy of Caring program in recognition of the exceptional way the organization meets the extraordinary need for their services. That’s especially true right now, as the pandemic’s economic toll creates a crisis for food banks across the state. As part of the Feeding America and Feeding the Carolinas networks, Second Harvest Food Bank serves 18 counties in northwest North Carolina, supporting over 460 local food assistance programs. More than 34 million meals were provided last year.

The coronavirus pandemic isn’t just creating more need for services and more hungry families, it is also complicating and exacerbating the nonprofit’s relief efforts.

“Most of us cannot fathom the challenges that Second Harvest Food Bank contends with on a daily basis,” said Jim Holmes, Sentinel’s founder and managing partner. “They have mountains to move for the communities they serve. Thanks to our partners at Westfield for lending a hand just when it was needed most.”

Westfield’s Legacy of Caring program, part of the Westfield Insurance Foundation, invests in communities and helps impact disaster recovery, family stability or safety. This year, the Foundation donated more than a half million dollars to neighborhoods across the nation through partnerships with Sentinel and 49 other risk and insurance firms. According to Westfield, awarding grants through the program is an extension of the fundamental role that insurance plays every day in stabilizing families, businesses and communities in times of uncertainty. Westfield has awarded more than $3 million to nonprofits since 2015.
