Are you ready for storm season? It’s that time of year again, when the meteorology department at Colorado State University gears up to make their predictions for the quickly approaching beginning of Storm Season!
As an adjuster, the kickoff to storm season typically brings about some of the most hectic months for claims and means the highest potential for widespread catastrophic damage. We know that anticipating storms is the key to being prepared. The season officially begins June 1, and runs through the end of November annually, and 2025 gave us a lot to recover from – 13 named storms and 9 hurricanes – 4 of which became major. 3 of those hurricanes even reached Category 5 intensity, and that is a recipe for disaster.
2026 is shaping up to be a much milder season, with the potential for 13 named storms which include an expected 6 hurricanes for the season. There are only 2 major hurricanes predicted, a welcome half of 2025 record. We’re anticipating roughly 55 named storm days, compared with the prior 20-year average of 69 days, and a predicted 20 Hurricane days compared to the historic average of 27. The milder season is a result of much weaker La Nina conditions that will likely transition later in the season this year.
While we hope for the best, if you’re a coastal resident or have properties on the Eastern Seaboard, it only takes one hurricane making landfall to cause an impact. We are crossing our fingers that most of these storms stay out at sea, but being prepared is still an important strategy as we brace ourselves ahead of the most active part of the season. If you need information on flood insurance, preparing an emergency storm kit, or suggestions on how to prepare yourself and your property before the worst happens, head on over to Sentinel’s storm center for all those resources and more. We know the first step to getting your life back on track quickly is to report your damages as soon as possible, so our Storm line number for claims reporting is open, and can be reached at 919-719-5636, or visit our website at https://sentinelra.com/storm-center.
